Our Hamsters Gave Birth!

Found them in the food dish this morning...

...to six little... um... gummi bears! Lol.

You can just imagine the chaos that ensued this morning... too bad we missed the actual birth. What a mess that would have been!

We've now had to separate the papa from the mama and the kiddies (as advised by stuff I read online... because we don't want mama to get pregnant again so soon lol).

Now mama hamster is nesting and gathering food again (because I had to rearrange their cage--the kiddies kept falling back into the cage kasi eh).

  6. Our hamsters gave birth to well... litte hamsters about 3 years ago and for some reason, the parents started eating some of the little hamsters. Rather disturbing but it happened and I just wanted to warn you. :)

  7. hey ur not supposed to touch them for 2 weeks even if the cage gets smelly so the mom wont feel threatened and eat them!

  8. Yup yun din nga yung worry namin eh, which is why binabantayan namin nang maigi yung hamsters.

I placed the papa hamster back into the fold and so far, no incidents. Tumutulong pa nga yung daddy maglagay ng nesting and mag-forage ng food para sa kiddies. =D

And so far I haven't seen any indications of hostility from both parents towards the babies. I think, and also based on some of the stuff that I read before, it could be because the pups are not normal or won't survive, so process of natural selection, mom takes care of the unwanted baby. But so far the babies are ok and looking quite healthy! very frisky I might add hehe.

hope things work out! Will pray that they'll stay alert and attentive towards their litter.

  9. I just read that you're not supposed to touch the baby hamsters so soon after birth. TT_TT

Even if that were the case I would have had to intervene because the mom kept leaving them alone in the cage, neglecting the others. Huhu. I hope she doesn't get angry at her pups or decide to get rid of them. T_T

  10. that's exactly what I read to but what happened to our litter was pretty brutal and graphic. I hope that doesn't happen to yours. :) cute little things.

  12. I guess the confined space makes it feel more secure. It is a lot warmer in there lol. Besides that's where the hamsters sleep during the day too.

  14. Igs --- hamsters, mice, rabbits... if they smell "human" on their babies, they eat them. ugh. remember we had tons of rabbits and hamsters growing up.

and mommy rodents like to hide their young until the have fur na. that's why she keeps moving them. so best to stuff their cage flooring with fine wood shavings or cotton or rice husks.. lots of places to hide. the babies will come out when they're good and ready. for now, don't touch them na, lest you want them to end up as hamster snacks. ugh.

wawa naman si Pancakes.. :( he doesn't deserve that..

  16. If they eat the babies that smell of human, does that mean we make them hungry? Cos we ARE delicious.
