I survived Ondoy! Top Ten Things I learned from Ondoy

Talk about a life experience. If at the end of my days, my children and children's children would ask me what I recall from my life, I would probably include TS Ondoy and how we lived through it as one of my most memorable experiences. Life experiences change you or you bring something with you at the end of it... Ondoy was a mix of both and more.

so without further adue... here's what I learned from Ondoy... my own Top Ten list of things I learned while flooded in my home.

1. First, it never hurts to be prepared.

No one expected the water to rise to high so fast... it's a good thing I've always been Mr Boyscout. I had the necessary tools, goods and knowledge to prepare myself and my family for the flood.

For example, we always keep our water at least half full before we start to order more drinking water... and we keep our rice bin always half full as well whenever we can. I knew to turn the circuit breaker off the second the water started hitting our floors, so as to avoid any dangers of electrocution... and I always keep batteries handy (although I always forget where they are) for our mini lamp/flashlight.

Buti na lang talga marami pa kaming drinking water and we had a good stock of canned goods in the house from the previous grocery run.

In short, we had enough for a few days. Kung kaya nyo, always keep stock of your stuff na pwede pang ilang araw... kasi palaging delikado pag running low on something important or basic like water, food, rice.

2. Magaling pala ako mag-swimming

Yes. Lumangoy ako sa baha. Baket? Kasi naubusan kami ng yosi. Which bring me to point 3...

3. I will not survive a calamity without cigarettes.

Nilangoy ko yung baha nung Sabado nang hapon para maghanap ng mga kandila at tinapay at yosi. Pero priority talaga ng biyahe ko, yosi.

But because the flood had unusually strong currents, I had a hard time reaching past the sari sari store near our house. Good thing it was elevated and it had stock.

Pero nauwi ako sa Champion cigarettes at Fortune reds. You should have seen the look on my face when the tindera said wala na silang yosi...

4. Malakas pala ang current ng baha.

This is dangerous. In all honesty what I did that day was foolhardy, and yes I will get it from my Mom and my sisters. But hey, I had full confidence in my swimming ability and I was familiar with my surroundings... kahit mataas baha I know which areas had walls safe for grabbing on to etc.

What I didn't account for was how strong the current would be. The water was flowing towards the lower part of Cainta... which was the subdivision next door, Vista Verde. There was a point when I was swimming dog paddle that I WASN'T MOVING AT ALL... I was swimming against the current and it was that strong...

5. Pwede palang floating device ang...

Mineral water container or those gallong jugs na kulay blue. Pwede ka din magputol ng kahoy ng puno ng saging. Put a couple or more together and you have a raft like the one in Castaway. Pwede din bola... (WILSOOOOON). Pwede din pala lumutang ang ref...

But one thing I did learn while floating around on my big blue water gallon was that, with a long enough stick (say the handle of a mop or something similar), you can use it as an anchor and use it to push you along like the rear oar of a gondola. It works and it really helped. Just be sure you still have a firm grip on your floatation device.

6. Rainwater = good. Floodwater = bad.

Pag tubig ulan, pwde mo pa ilagay sa containers at ipangligo, hugas. Yung tubig baha, mas lalo na pag naging kulay putik / lahar na... DEINS. Mas lalo na pag may nakita kang mga lumulutang na kung anu ano... it was fine swimming through the flood on the first day. But Sunday was terrible... it was already the color of mud... and it smelled terrible. Plus all the cards that had drowned spilled oil into the water, which made it even worse.

But at the height of the flood, we were able to take a bath using the rain water we accumulated in drums and pails. Even after the flood, it rained for a short bit, we put the pails under the roof drains and got a lot of water for cleaning the house and walls.

But the floodwater... it was a bad idea for using it to clean the walls... it wouldn't get the mud off. And did I mention it smelled terrible?

7. In a calamity, the first living things to go are pets.

Plants can survive. Cool. Pets will mostly die.

My neighbor's cats, all four of them, were indoors and stuck in their low ceiling bungalow when the floods hit. Poor cats had nowhere to hide when the water rose to their roof. They died indoors. While swimming out of our house on the second day, I came across 4 floating dead dogs and one huge dead rat.

My janitor fish escaped from the aquarium too while I was removing some water from it to make it lighter to carry. He's probably still alive somewhere.

8. Electronic devices CAN STILL WORK even when drenched in water.

You just have to dry them properly before you plug them in. Neighbors' TV sets and radios were all able to work again even with all that flood water. My refrigerator still worked even if it was submerged knee high in water. And according to stuff I read online, even your cellphones can work... all you have to do to properly dry it out is to submerge the drenched cellphone into a bowl of rice overnight, and the rice will absorb all the water out.

9. Through a calamity like this, we really are all dependent on technology.

We had no communication for a day or so. The only real way was through cellular phone. Once the electricity was out, there was no internet, no phone lines, no TV... I had no idea how bad the whole thing was until Wednesday when our electricity came back and I saw how bad it was other areas.

So many people had no other way to get in touch with their loved ones. And i shudder to think what would happen if, knock on wood, we all lose communication... even radio. How in the world are we supposed to talk to everyone else? Ito ilang araw lang di mo ma-contact kaibigan at kamag-anak mo... hysteric na yung ibang tao... what more pag linggo... buwan... taon?

But then again, it was technology that allowed a lot of the relief and help to come in. I remember, the only radio we had was an FM transistor radio... and Jam 88.3 Rock Ed Radio kept broadcasting people who needed help, updates on the flood, and they were reading twitter, plurk and facebook updates on people who were looking for friends and family. It was really cool what they did for that, and how they helped the whole thing. If it weren't for technology like this, a lot of people would have probably been left stranded on their roofs and houses.

10. It's the simple things that matter.

Family. Friends. Food. Water. Clothing. Shelter. (Add cigarettes to my list.)

But seriously, we were lucky. One of our friends and her husband stayed over Friday night because they had a new born baby (1 month old) and wanted to visit us since we hadn't seen each other in a while. They live in Marikina. Today their house is gone, all that's left is a shattered rubble of wood and metal. We all shudder to think what would have happened if they didn't sleep over that night.

During the few days that we had no electricity and our first floor was flooded, we had no bathroom (bathroom is only on the first floor) and we had no cold water. We had no electricity so we could not sleep with all the mosquitos at night.

All of these things we took for granted because we were used to living well... just to lose something like the use of a toilet or an electric fan... it was quite tough.

And yes, being with close friends and family... I wouldn't have it any other way. If it truly was the end of all things, you'd rather spend the last moments with your loved ones than alone on the street. Like some people I know who were stranded that day and could not get home, or could not get in touch with their loved ones... that must have been terrible. I would not wish that on anyone, that fear and anxiety of not knowing.

Which is why at the end of the calamity, we were still happy and ok. We had what we needed... the essentials. Sure we lost some of the basic necessities but hey, even with the rising water we were having fun and joking around and basically happy.

...

Now that there's another storm coming in, I pray that it doesn't get worse than what has already happened. Looking at pictures and walking through streets seeing the aftermath of the floods, I still can't believe it's the same city.

Whatever happens this weekend, I know we're prepared. I hope everyone else is ready as well, and I hope that we've already seen the worst of it.

To my friends, thanks for all the support. You know who you are. Your words and prayers are already more than enough help.

To my Level Up family and the entire PLDT group of companies... wow! You guys did a stellar job of keeping your employees at the top of the priority list. Thank you thank you thank you. My family and I will never forget this.

To my family, thank you for all the help. Even through each other's troubles you guys still stuck it out even further to help me. Thank you from all of us... I thank God you're all safe and the floods didn't affect you as badly as it did me.

Lastly, to my baby, thanks! Thanks! Thanks! You made this life experience truly memorable.

Yihee sobrang cheesy!

See you all on the other side. Ingat!

BRUTAL POLICE AND PSG RESPONSE!

I just saw this off of JuanCountry.com and then the corresponding photos from the linked Facebook album.

From JuanCountry.com
Here’s a picture of the PSG dragging the chairperson of the UP-CSWCD Student Council by the hair. Picture taken by Alanah Torralba.

Apparently they got tired of using the steel railings so they decided to bring out their guns. Picture by Danny Boy Pata.

And I quote from JuanCountry.

I understand that the PSG and the PNP had to move against the demonstration since they were already inside the Palace grounds and they had no permit but they could have done this in a more civil manner.
However, I am in no way condoning the actions of the students as well. If they really wanted to stage a rally, they should have secured the necessary permits. Going inside Malacanang and suddenly staging a rally is just asking for it. I hate to say this but they were really inviting trouble the moment they went into the Palace with a plan to do a sudden rally.
Regardless of what happened, I still condemn the violence committed by the PSG and PNP. I hope that the policemen and the PSG members caught on camera doing these despicable acts will be fired and then jailed. The pictures speak for themselves.

I totally agree with what this 100%... the students that went there with no permit and stormed the palace grounds were really asking for it. But there is no excuse for the kind of brutality that the PSG and police showed.

And what really sent shivers down my spine were the similarities of today's happenings and the pre-Martial Law events. I know I wasn't even around then or too young to really experience them first hand, but I've read and seen a lot of the remakes and documentaries on Dekada 70 already to know that this isn't right. My Tita even commented that this was just like the First Quarter Storm right before Martial Law happened.

All I can say now is... God help us all.

Haaayz... ibang tao talga hindi maka-GETS!

Here's my latest CNET blog. I wrote about how Friendster is still the number one freaking social networking site in the Philippines despite the rapid growth of Facebook.

And this one guy JUST DOESN'T GET IT. Lol. (Read the blog comments. Sigh)

Anyway my last reply to him was funneee.

I said, and I quote:
Anyway, as is with any online enterprise, a lot of what's going on in the site is because of the audience it has... and like what imageguru mentioned in her comment, FS is, demographically speaking, your DE audience. That's where FS gets its numbers from, so regardless of how vastly superior FB is in terms of web features, FS is doing something right because they're still keeping their audience, and still keeping them happily active.

Along that line of thought... I wonder what would happen if Willie Revillame tells his viewers to add him on Facebook? Or to play Mafia Wars with him? Is there a Wowowee Facebook App in the works?

Lol.

So what do you think? Now that Multiply has declined the top spot to Facebook, will Facebook be able to topple Friendster? Is everyone playing Mafia Wars? Restaurant City? Farm Town?

What G.I. Joes Do During Their Spare Time

What do you do when you have multimillion dollars worth of technology in your hands? Well, you play with it of course!

G.I. JOE Delta 6 accelerator suit skate stunt from Rubber Man on Vimeo.

Hehe... it's a viral video showcasing the 'accelerator suit' in the G.I. Joe movie... still it's hilarious what they think of for viral marketing. Thanks to AintItCool for the Yo Joe.

Now I wonder when Lola Techie will try on one of those?...

And as an added bonus... I found this gem on YouTube.

Our Hamsters Gave Birth!

Found them in the food dish this morning...

...to six little... um... gummi bears! Lol.

You can just imagine the chaos that ensued this morning... too bad we missed the actual birth. What a mess that would have been!

We've now had to separate the papa from the mama and the kiddies (as advised by stuff I read online... because we don't want mama to get pregnant again so soon lol).

Now mama hamster is nesting and gathering food again (because I had to rearrange their cage--the kiddies kept falling back into the cage kasi eh).

Yahoo Purple Hunt Pinoy Statement Tees

Repost from my Cnet Asia Blog.

Just got word via Janette Toral in Facebook that Yahoo is going to release Pinoy themed statement tees for their Yahoo Purple Hunt campaign... and since I'm a big fan of statement tees (and since they're a hot trend in Philippine pop culture now) I thought I'd share some of the tees they pre-released online.

*Singing* Moymoy's Back... Alright!

And yes... That's Mark Herras.

...

Kinakain ba ang Globe Load mo? HASSEL DI BA?!

Yup. After the Nth time, I am finally ranting on my Cnet Asia blog. And yes I'm ranting here as well because I want to find out if this is really as widespread as our dear Senators claim to be and if it is indeed isolated to just Globe or are other Telcos just as guilty.

Here's an excerpt from my Cnet Asia blog post.
I've been a Globe and Smart prepaid user for quite a while now. The main reason I maintain two prepaid numbers is quite simple: it's cheaper to call and SMS people in the same network. Lately however, I've been using my Globe prepaid less and less due to a number of problems with the network.

First of all, the disappearing load. That has got to be the single, most inconvenient and frustrating thing ever. Me and my friends load 20 bucks to our prepaid numbers, and the second load confirmation arrives and we do a balance check (which is free thank God), there is only 15 or 17 bucks left on the account. What the hell? I was about to register for a prepaid SMS service but I never got past that part because my load was short 3 bucks. Same thing happened with my girlfriend the other day when she loaded 20 on her phone, there was only 17.50 in her account when she did a balance inquiry.

Don't believe me? Try searching through Google.
So what about you? Any prepaid load horror stories you'd like to share?

When it rains... it definitely pours...

This is not drama...

Why is it that the harder you try to fix something, the more you tend to damage it? My computer, for instance, whenever I try and tweak this sad, little unit, I end up making things worse, ruining the registry, adding unnecessary programs that bog down its memory, defrag a drive that can't be defragged because of lack of space. Why bother when, even if it was such an old and sad little thing, it was already working fine?

Or when you're cooking something simple... you want to try and make it more interesting... like adding a few more peppers to your adobo, switching bacon with ham in your carbonara, or putting ketchup on your fried eggs. Why ruin a good thing by adding unnecessary ingredients?

Or when you write a song. The first time you sit down and pen the lyrics, a melody already playing in your head, you strum it on your guitar and in that one pass from intro to verse to chorus to bridge, everything fits perfectly. When you start adding the frills, change the words a bit, or try and sing it better... something gets lost. Why impose structure on something that is inately beautiful?

This is not drama. This is remorse. This is regret. This is hurt.

I fell in love with someone who, to me, was perfect. Perfect because she had her imperfections, her flaws, her unique, unchangeable traits... all of which, put together made her glow. That was who she was, that was who she was meant to be. Beautiful. A diamond in the rough.

But the more you try and meld her, the more you try and ask her to change for you, to be more perfect for you... that's when the luster begins to fade. That's when the true beauty begins to wane.

She becomes sad, though she doesn't show you. She loses life in her step, in her day to day routine... she loses herself. Her soul diminishes because of someone else's tampering.

I am guilty of that tampering.

She wasn't meant to be this way, but I tried. I placed myself at her feet, and demanded she do the same. I needed her love, and she gave it, but in the process slowly lost herself.

What good is love then if it cannot balance compromise with understanding and forgiveness?

A love so frail and fragile stands no chance against so many forces pushing against it. And even if we tried, even if we fought so hard, tooth and nail, to strike that balance... the damage had already been done.

I tampered with something so beautiful and all it did was make it worse.

When it rains, it definitely pours. Because here, now, on the eve of the gloomiest day of this year, I lost her.

I walked in the rain. Through the barren, lifeless and unforgiving streets I walked. I found no solace or comfort in the shadows. And the cold beat down on my soul like I was forever tormented and haunted.

Tonight I have given up.

But only for tonight.

With the coming of the dawn comes the promise of a new day, a brighter day. Forever the optimist, I look to the dawn, and know it's all going to get better, even if the damage had already been done.

I cry bitter tears now, and wonder how I'll ever get through the cold, uncaring night.

But as sure as dawn will come, this sadness I know too shall pass.

I loved her too much, when I should have just loved her enough.

Forgive me... I pray to Our Lord that someday, the bitter memory of this night will pass, and I can move on with my life.

This is not drama. Just a little bit of a prayer, an expression of remorse, a hope for better things to come.

Good bye, my love.

Lol.

Just to let you guys know, he's been reported directly to the higher ups. Within the day, his account will be dead, his email address reported and sent to me, his IP address logged, and other personal info tagged as security concern.

In short, it took one email to shut him down. And a few more steps to find out who he really is.

Online is a dangerous place to make waves and to fool around, as I have most definitely learned to painstaking detail. If you want to pull an Emil, be sure to know what to do. Like not use your home or office IP for example... tsk tsk. Stupid little uneducated little man.

Or, using an email address with your name in the profile. tsk tsk. Ignorant and sad brainless worm.

Or, posting in people's networks, which let's us figure out how you got into Multiply in the first place. tsk tsk... tiny insignificant fly on the wall.

Sadly, I wouldn't want to go down to his level. So I'll do the next best thing.

If you want to know who he really is, shoot me a PM. Hehehe...

in the meantime, I'm dumping his email address in porn subscription sites, viagra newsletters and self help online seminars.

that will keep him busy for a while.

Enjoy the rest of your week folks! ^_^

Ako Mismo... nag-co-comment na rin sa AkoMismo.org

Since I've been reading a lot of back and forth about the Ako Mismo advocay campaign, I thought I may as well jump on the bandwagon.

Here's a little bit of what I said:
Being that the Philippines is now a blog nation, you can just imagine how many people immediately took it on and spread it like wildfire throughout the web. People would link their Ako Mismo statements to each other, link the site on their blogs, etc. that in just a matter of hours the site's traffic ballooned.

But of course it was not without its share of negative feedback.

Just read the rest my Cnet Asia post on my whole take on the Ako Mismo campaign here.

Above are screenshots of the infamous Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili sex video that was sent to STIR by an Anonymous email sender a few minutes ago. Based on the screenshots above and the actual video, the so called sex video just contains some sensual dance moves of Katrina and Hayden while the latter sings to the tune of "Careless Whisper." Whether you call it a sex video or pre-sex video is already up for you to decide. The mystery sex video that's been hidden for a long time has finally found its way to the public's eyes after so many months of denial. Now, can a picture and video lie?

Hard Drive Crash = Life Crash

I just lost all of my data.

Yesterday early morning I was preparing some of my usual Monday reports while downloading upgrades to my hardware. My downloads go directly do my biggest storage drive, a 320GB Seagate single stripped as a Raid drive, courtesy of my motherboard's built in raid and SATA driver. In English, it simply means that this big ass hard disk is wired to go extra fast. I installed it that way for my video editing projects, so they'd run smoother.

Anyway, from out of the blue, my downloads stopped. If you guys use Vuze (formerly Azureus) you'll know a download's stopped (or in deep doodoo) when the smiley face turns dark red and frowning. Lo and behold ALL of my downloads, whether the files I've been seeding or the ones I was currently downloading, were now beet-red frowning faces.

Shocked, I did the first thing any sane PC user would do when a usual problem like this would present itself--restart Windows.

That's when everything went downhill.

My system wouldn't start if my hard drive was attached, and if I was able to run windows it would hang every five minutes.

So, after an arduous and painstaking crash recovery process, I was able to back up some of my data, beginning with my personal files and projects... but that was a 320GB hard drive... you can't just transfter that much data in a working window of 5 minutes and hope to be ok.

Bottomline, what little time I had left, I used to save the things more important to me... my digicam photos. Yes, call me camwhore, but that was almost 10 years worth of photos and videos. I wasn't about to let that go without a fight.

Next in my list would have been my work folder, all of the projects I'd done in the past 5 to 6 years was stored in that hard drive. I was going to back up my projects folder starting with my most recent work when, lo and behold, the hard drive started squealing like mad. And then it died.

When your hard drive starts sounding like a teapot, it's time to let go I think.

So, I spent all of last night and this morning trying to repair it. I've even started talking to my hard drive and massaging it gently in the hopes that it might revive itself. Sadly, that only works on my knees when old age sets in.

Now I'm wondering what the hell I'm supposed to do.

Anyone know anyone willing to do data recovery for free? =(

Chris Avellone at the e-Services 2009

My gamer geek alter ego is all giddy with excitement! Chris Avellone, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Obsidian Entertainment, is going to be the first talk during the second day of the e-Services Conference at the SMX Convention Center (beside the SM Mall of Asia). And yes, he was the lead programmer behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, to name a few, and also part one of the designers behind such awesome hits such as Icewind Dale and my all-time fave Fallout 2. Chris gained fame after the success of Planescape:Torment, arguably one of the best RPGs in recent years.

Zeros Over Tokyo - New Single

Latest recording, Jan 2 2009.

Song is called Serious Talks & Confrontations.

Serious Talks & Confrontations (Ver 1) - Zeros Over Tokyo

Lyrics:
Verse 1:
Why the silence,
where are your words now?
For all the good they've done you,
what have you got now?
Go ahead, don't hold yourself back
Just spit it out, say it out loud

Chorus:
Say what you have to say
Say what I'm dying to hear
Let's hear it now

Verse 2:
Won't you fill the space
with more than you're awkward gaze
For all your empty talk
you never gave them much thought
So won't you open your mouth, just let it all out
Go ahead, cause there's no turning back

Chorus:
Say what you want to say
Say what I'm dying to hear
Let's hear it..

Bridge

Chorus 2x

Today is the first day of the rest of my life...

It's in God's hands now.

See you on the other side, friends. Hope I'll still be there.
